Early Years Teachers work in pre-school, nursery and reception classes with children
aged between three and five.
They are responsible for developing and implementing work schemes and lesson plans
in line with the requirements of the Foundation Phase. This involves organising and developing the early years learning environment and resources in order to facilitate learning.
Early Years Teachers foster the understanding, and social and communication skills of the children. They develop and maintain relationships with parents/guardians to
further support pupils. Early Years Teachers record observations and summarise the children’s achievements. They focus on optimum child development and preparation for a successful transition to primary school education.

Job Role and Duties

Ø Motivating and stimulating the children’s learning abilities often using play activities ;
Ø Interacting and supporting children and providing them with a safe and secure learning environment ;
Ø Devising and producing visual aids and teaching resources ;
Ø Organising learning materials and making imaginative use of resources ;
Ø To plan for and lead appropriately the Teaching Assistants assigned as class support
Ø Assisting with the development of children’s personal/social language abilities ;
Ø Supporting the development of children’s basic skills, including physical coordination, speech and communication ;
Ø Encouraging children’s mathematical and creative development through stories,
songs, games, drawing and imaginative play ;
Ø Developing children’s curiosity and knowledge ;
Ø Working with others to plan and coordinate work ;
Ø Sharing knowledge and best practice gained with other practitioners ;
Ø Observing, assessing, and recording each child’s progress ;
Ø Attending In-Service Training ;
Ø Ensuring the health and safety of children and staff is maintained during all activities both inside and outside the classroom ;
Ø Keeping up to date with changes in the curriculum and developments in best practice ;
