WHY USE FOCUS GROUPS?

Focus groups are not limited to the realm of big brands or political parties. Their wide ranging applications offer economical ways for various sized companies to understand their target audience. Focus groups are valued for gaining new insights by generating data through the interaction of group members. The data is more naturalistic because the social context permits a more spontaneous sharing of information, as opposed other forms of interviewing.

Key benefits and applications of Focus Groups:

- Help companies develop products that are more desirable to potential customers.

- Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts and opinions in order to obtain new insights about how a particular product, service or issue is perceived.

- The group context enables diversity of opinion to be explored in one interview, and any significant new issues to be more deeply investigated.

- A comfortable and non-judgemental environment facilitates both positive and negative feedback. Skilled interviewers help participants present their own views and feelings whilst simultaneously reflecting upon what they hear from others.

- Can be used in conjunction with other research strategies, such as helping to develop the questions for large-scale surveys.

- Applications include product development or evaluation, branding, service planning, customer satisfaction, decision and policy making. Typically, a company may wish to pilot an idea for a product or its packaging.
