Bristol general jobs

Publishing Editor x2 (1x permanent, 1x maternity cover)

Date posted: Tuesday 15th July
Location: Bristol

We have an exciting opportunity for a friendly, confident and dedicated team player with excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills, and good scientific judgment to join our busy, expanding publishing operation.

You will play a key role in the scientific assessment of papers submitted for publication, selecting reviewers, taking decisions at key stages of the peer-review process and assisting with the development of one or more of our research journals. The job will also involve contributing to journal development strategy, identifying and exploiting publishing opportunities, supporting the Publisher at board meetings, representing the journal at conferences and visiting key academics around the world. This role is an excellent opportunity to begin a career in scientific publishing with a rapidly growing organization.

As a Publishing Editor, you’ll be crucial to the maintenance and development of our journals. Working in a close-knit team, you’ll focus on the peer review system – the process which ensures quality and validity of research papers submitted to the IOP for publication. Academics electronically submit research papers to us for consideration, which are then forwarded to leading academics in the particular field for assessment in terms of quality and significance. You’ll interpret the comments of these referees, making editorial decisions whether or not articles are suitable for publication.
Another element of the role is journal promotion: attending three or four conferences a year, raising the visibility of our journals to the scientific community and observing developments in a particular field.

You’ll also hone new skills and gain real breadth of experience assisting with the general running and promotion of the journal. Varied tasks include helping to commission special reviews and issues, liaising with the marketing department to design marketing materials and email campaigns, preparing reports on journal usage and performance, and preparing for Editorial Board meetings.
